Winter Jazz Concert
For this concert we prepared 3 songs; Great Minds Swing Alike, Winter Wonderland, and Work Song. While we learned these songs I tried to focus on collaboration. To do this I started by listening to my section. I worked on blending my tone with theirs as well as staying in tune. Then as a section we worked on our sound we realized that the second alto, Morgan Boothe, and I needed to play louder and the tenors, Jacob Richards and Gabe Choy, needed to play slightly quieter. As a section we learned to collaborate to improve our sound. I also had to collaborate with the rhythm section during my solo so the timing and chord changes sounded good. As a musician you must exercise collaboration at all times, you have to listen to yourself as well as the whole band to achieve a blended and united sound. This concert helped me build character. I felt incredibly sick and was very close to fainting right before our band was supposed to perform. I watched as my band played our first few songs and I could not bear to be up there for my solo during the last song. So I preservered and got my instrument last minute and walked onto stage to tell my teacher I could play. I played in the last song the very best I could and I am proud of my performance even though I was not in a very state of mind or body. I am incredibly thankful that through the process of learning these pieces I learned to improve my collaboration skills as well as build character.
As a whole the concert was very enjoyable aside from the performance room being a little small. As for my band we noticeably improved from the festival we went to, our sound and dynamics sounded better. I think I could've improved my performance by listening to more solos to get ideas for mine and play louder. As a band we could improve by paying attention to each others parts more, so being more aware. The other jazz band was also very good, you could hear the texture and dynamic changes very well. The jazz choir also performed very festive songs with a consistent blend of sound. If you follow the link below you can see the songs we performed.
